Trevithick Tunnel

Discover Trevithick Tunnel

On the 21st February 1804, Merthyr witnessed the first ever steam locomotive journey, as Richard Trevithick’s ‘Pendydarren Locomotive’ travelled down through Pentrebach and on to Abercynon.

Trevithick is largely overlooked as the creator of the World’s first steam locomotive but the site in Merthyr Tydfil is now part of a nine-mile heritage trail which passes through diverse habitats and is ideal for walking, cycling, wheelchairs or horse riding.
