Health, Social Care and Well-Being 2008 - 2011

Many factors combine together to affect the health and well-being of individuals and communities.  Whether people are healthy or not is determined by their circumstances and environment. To a large extent, factors such as where we live, the state of our environment, genetics, our income and education level, and our relationships with friends and family all have considerable impacts on health and well-being.

Health, Social Care and Well-Being Forecast?

The forecast for Merthyr Tydfil is brighter thanks to the creation of the Health Social Care and Well-Being Forecast 2008 - 2011.

Over the last few months the Health, Social Care and Well-being Strategic Partnership have worked closely with the community to find out what needs to be done to improve the Health, Social Care and Well-being of Merthyr Tydfil.  Information gathered from this extensive exercise enabled the partnership to identify local needs and consider how we aim to improve the health and well-being of the population of Merthyr Tydfil County Borough by tackling all factors that affect our health.

Following this period of consultation, the Health, Social Care and Well-Being Strategy for 2008 - 2011 has now been developed.  The strategy sets out how, together, we aim to improve the health and well-being of all residents and making sure that you can get treatment and help when you need it. The Strategy and Executive Summary documents can be found on the 'Useful Documents' page on the Brighter Merthyr Tydfil website.

Strategic Priorities

The strategic priorities identified in the strategy are as follows:

  • Mental Health
  • Chronic Conditions
  • Substance Misuse
  • Older Peoples Health and Well-Being
  • Health Lifestyle
  • Worklessness

What can I do to improve my health?

Being healthy is much more than not being ill. Our health and well-being is influenced by many factors including where we live, work and learn; our lifestyle; our relationships with family and friends and access to services and facilities.

Small and inexpensive changes to your daily routine can make a big difference to your health.

Everyday activities such as taking the stairs instead of the lift, or walking to the shops rather than jumping into the car can make a big difference to your health.  You don’t have to join an expensive health club or gym to improve your level of physical activity.
